ABSTRACT
Background: The aim of the study was to analyze radon concentrations in the air in educational and childcare institutions located in regions of Poland subject to mandatory monitoring, in relation to the reference level of 300 Bq/m³ adopted for the optimization of radiological protection. Material and Methods: The analysis was based on the results of commercial measurements conducted by the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine in Łódź 2022–2025. The study covered 9 voivodships and included primary schools, secondary schools, school complexes, nurseries, and kindergartens. Measurements were performed during the heating season (October–March). Track detectors placed in dosimetric holders were distributed to the facilities together with instructions for use. After the exposure period, the detectors were chemically processed, and track density was analyzed using an image analysis system in accordance with an accredited measurement procedure. Results: The largest number of measurements was carried out in primary and secondary schools. Exceedances of the 300 Bq/m³ reference level were most frequently observed in kindergartens and primary schools. In other types of facilities, exceedances were less frequent but showed local occurrence and regional variability. Conclusions: The obtained results indicate the need for systematic monitoring of radon concentrations in educational institutions. In >20% of the surveyed rooms, the reference level was exceeded, and in some cases concentrations were >1000 Bq/m³ (the so-called intervention level), which demonstrates an urgent need to develop a strategic framework and implement remedial actions.
