ABSTRACT
The aging of the working population necessitates maintaining work ability under conditions of prolonged exposure to occupational hazards and increasingly demanding work environments. In this context, the mental health of older workers assumes particular importance, as it determines their occupational functioning, subjectively perceived work ability, and decisions regarding retirement. This article addresses the issue of mental health among employees aged >50 years in relation to psychosocial hazards present in the work environment. Research findings indicate that a deterioration in mental well-being may limit occupational functioning, even when the employee’s physical capacity still enables them to perform their job. The article identifies key psychosocial risks, including time pressure, job insecurity, age-related discrimination (ageism), and challenges associated with the ongoing digitalization of the workplace, such as technostress and digital exclusion. It also presents recommended directions for action for employers and management, including an age management approach, solutions proposed within the Joint Action CHRODIS PLUS: Implementation of Good Practices for Chronic Diseases framework, and measures aimed at preventing digital exclusion.
